KOYORI PROJECT 2020
By Lanna Culture and Crafts Association
In the old days, villagers who lived at Phayao Lake used the fish baskets called “Khong” to catch fish in the lake. The art of making Khong has been handed down to the Sanpuloei Handicraft Group in Phayao province, who make bags using the Khong technique of weaving bamboo and water hyacinth. Craftsman makes products with traditional weaving techniques, dyeing the materials with natural dyes, and decorate by crocheting to create their original creations.
For this project, we created a collection of bags under the brand "Suparada" inspired by the fishermen's way of life in Phayao Lake. The collection includes shopping bags made of woven water hyacinth inspired by fishing nets, graphics on bags inspired by the shape and color of bamboo knives case, and the shape of bags in this collection inspired by the fisherman's tools. A new design is made from new developed which combined the water hyacinth and bamboo with thread and weaved with traditional techniques. We also design a fish key chain made of water hyacinth for accessories to attach the bag. Inherited the wisdom of the people who lived by the lake catching fish, this collection fits into the lives of people Nowaday.
